Abstract
Prismatic crystals of orthorhombic 1:1 solvate (space group Pnma or Pn21a, α = 31.47 Å, β = 10.07 Å, c = 10.22 Å, Z = 4) are obtained by slowly evaporating trichlorethylene solutions of C60 at room temperature. Decagonal morphologies, i.e. crystals with angles of about 36° between adjacent faces, are also encountered. Although the enthalpy of desolvation, + 51.3 J per gram of solvate (+ 43.7 kJ per mole of solvent), is close to that of sublimation for pure solvent (+ 40.6 kJ mo1−1), the formation of the solvate from its solid components is accompanied with a negative excess volume (−40 Å3 per formula unit). Keywords
