Reform and Repression in Tibet

Abstract
Martial law was declared in Lhasa on March 8, 1989, following three days of riots during which thousands of Tibetans took to the streets to attack Chinese-owned stores and government offices. The riots broke out after unarmed demonstrators were gunned down by security forces in Lhasa's central square. In May, following demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of Chinese in support of hunger-striking students in Tiananmen Square, martial law was declared in Beijing. What is the connection between these two events?
