Abstract
One of the major objectives of this symposium is to promote the integration of ecological aspects into the decision-making processes associated with coastal engineering projects and the protection and longterm management of the areas around the projects. In the decision-making process we can distinguish: participants, issues, strategies, procedures and interferences in the process. Each of these elements may incorporate environmental aspects in the decision-making process. In case of very large and complex projects special measures will be required, for instance the creation of special committees or boards with adequate political support and legal power. Keywords
