Adhesion Between Retina and Pigment Epithelium

Abstract
The adhesion of the retina to the pigment epithelium was investigated in rabbit eyes in vitro. An apparatus was designed to measure and record the force needed to peel the retina off the pigment epithelium in strips of eye tissue. The force of adhesion was greater at the equator than at the fundus periphery, and greater at 12 o'clock than at 6 o'clock. It was strongest at the ora serrata. Also, the retina was more adherent in pigmented than in albino fundi. No significant difference was found between eyes from male and female rabbits or between right eyes and left eyes. This peeling test is considered adequate to assess and compare the strength of chorioretinal adhesions obtained by different surgical techniques.Keywords
