A Self-Medication Program for Cardiology Inpatients

Abstract
A pilot self-medication program for hospitalized cardiology patients is described. Pharmacists have instructed and maintained 96 patients thus far. A medication error study on 78 of the patients revealed an error rate of 2.5%. Twenty-six patients who had-participated in the program were asked to evaluate it using a short-answer questionnaire. Their opinions indicated that the program is beneficial. Nurses and physicians working in the program believe it is worthwhile. Four case studies are presented which indicate strengths and weaknesses in the program.
