Methanol Poisoning in an Infant

Abstract
SINCE Marc-Aurele and Schreiner1 demonstrated the usefulness of hemodialysis in the therapy of methanol poisoning, this method of therapy has proved to be an effective means of removal of methanol and its metabolic products from patients with methanol intoxication.2 Peritoneal dialysis also has been utilized for the treatment of adult patients with methanol poisoning.3,4 To our knowledge, there have been no cases of methanol poisoning in infants or children which were treated with either peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. We wish to report the case of a 10-week-old infant who sustained severe methanol poisoning but recovered after treatment with intravenously administered bicarbonate and peritoneal dialysis. Methods Blood samples were obtained by venipuncture, placed in sealed tubes, and transported to the laboratory without delay.
