Social Engagement Versus Isolation: The Case of the Aged in SRO Hotels

Abstract
Studies of the elderly inhabitants of single room occupancy hotels have generally characterized them as lifelong loners who are unable to engage in affective interactions. Utilizing network analysis techniques, the sociability levels of aged hotel residents were reexamined. The results indicated that older residents had viable personal networks which provided both material and emotional support, although they were relatively isolated versus other urban samples. Recognition of these networks has important ramifications for service-providers and policy-makers.
