Abstract
The refractive indices for para-azoxyanisole, para-azoxyphenetole and their mixtures, in the nematic phase, are measured for five wave-lengths. The indices of mixtures of various compositions can be calculated from those of the pure compounds considered at the same values of the “relative temperature”. Maier-Saupe's theory indicates for all nematic liquid erystals the properties are comparable at the same values of the “reduced temperature”. We show that, for para-azoxyanisole and para-azoxyphenetole, “relative temperatures” and “reduced temperatures” are equivalent. Finally our results are in favour of “reduced temporature” notion.
