Abstract
The energy expended per measurable water molecule decomposed in aqueous formic acid solns. is 29 [plus or minus] 3 ev for Co60 gamma rays, H3 beta rays, Po210 alpha rays and the recoil products produced by the action of neutrons on B10. Most of the energy is spent in the production of free radicals with gamma and beta rays, and in the formation of hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide with the more densely ionizing radiations. Molecular product formation per 100 ev varies from 0.44 for gamma rays to 1.57 for alpha rays. The free-radical yield per 100 ev decreases from 3.0 for gamma rays to 0.26 for B10 (n,[alpha]) Li7 disintegrations. These results may be pertinent to interpretation of effects in biological systems. Keywords
