Abstract
Using geometric focusing technique with a magnetically insulated diode, we have studied the focusing properties of an intense pulsed proton beam. Local divergence is found to have less effect on the focusing than deviation of ion trajectories from the ideal ones (aberration), which strongly affects the focusing. An annular distribution of the ion current density is found by ion-trajectory calculations to be a space-charge effect. The space-charge neutralization factor is estimated to be more than 99.9%.Keywords
