Surgical Treatment of Rhinophyma

Abstract
The term "rhinophyma" is derived from the Greek,rhis, 'nose' andphyma, 'growth.' It is a benign condition which, microscopically, shows enlarged cystic sebaceous glands, marked fibrosis, and vascular dilation. Rhinophyma is usually seen in males over 50 years of age. The male-female ratio is 10 to 1. The onset is insidious, and the course of this disease is chronic, with acute exacerbations and periods of remission over many years. There is considerable variation in the size and extent of the lesions. Fortunately the alar rims and columella are usually not affected. The lesions generally develop into nodules or lobulations, separated by deep depressions. Vascular dilatation gives the nose a purplish or reddish color. The skin pores are visible and sebaceous material can be extracted from them. On the basis of the sebaceous gland pathology, the lesion has been termed "sebaceoma nasi" or "adenoma sebaceum."
