Bacteremia Following Cardiac Catheterization

Abstract
SEVERAL cases of fever after cardiac catheterization have recently been noted at this hospital. The characteristics of these episodes — namely, a shaking chill occurring approximately an hour after the onset of the operative procedure, followed by fever associated with hypotension — suggested bacterial contamination. No bacterial growth, however, was noted in any of several blood cultures obtained from each patient during these febrile episodes.During the years that cardiac catheterization had been performed at this hospital, no significant problem indicating inadequate sterilization had been described until these cases occurred.
