Abstract
The largest eigenvalue of the transfer matrix of the two-dimensional planar model is calculated by a variational method. It is shown that this approximation becomes asymptotically exact at high and low temperatures. The computed internal energy agrees within 5% with recent Monte Carlo results in the whole temperature range. Keywords
