Abstract
The history of low-aspect-ratio 'spherical' tokamak research is described and the advantages claimed for the concept are outlined and compared with experimental results from the START device and elsewhere. Further development of the spherical tokamak, and its potential for a materials test facility or ultimately a fusion plant, are discussed. Keywords
