Abstract
An example of primary splenic neutropenia in a 55-yr.-old housewife was observed for 2.5 yrs. following splenectomy without recurrence of the origi- nal symptoms of fatigue, ulcers of the mouth, arthritis and cough. The absolute number of polymorphonuclears in the peripheral blood had been 20 per cu. mm. before splenectomy. 24 hrs. after splenectomy it was 5600, 1 yr. later 2300, after 2 yrs. 900, and after 2.5 yrs. only 700. This may indicate a relapse of the neutropenia. No accessory spleen was found at operation. There may have been overactivity of the phagocytic activity of the reticulo-endothelial cells in other organs such as the liver and lymph nodes. The question arises as to the advisability of the use of colloidal radioactive compounds (radioactive chromium phosphate or colloidal radiogold) in such cases of recurrent postsplenectomized neutropenia to block the reticulo-endothelial cells. Keywords
