Abstract
A suspension of mycelium of Penicillium italicum in 0.9% NaCl in 0.5% alcohol at pH 6.0 and 26[degree]C reduces the carbonyl group of capillin to the corresponding polyene alcohol (capillinol) with a melting point at 104.5[degree]C and [[alpha]]25 of + 12.0[degree] in 3.15% alcohol soln., but none of its stereoisomer is formed. The sterospecific reduction of capillin is catalyzed by various fungi and yeasts, but not by any bacteria tested. Keywords
