Demonstration of Tubercle Bacilli in Sputum Smears: Selection of Choice Particles Compared with Various Sodium Hydroxide Concentration Techniques

Abstract
Direct smear examination of selected particles from sputums submitted for examination for tubercle bacilli gave more positive results than 3 NaOH concn. methods, even when the latter were made with the best technique yet devised. Of 716 specimens, 28.5% were positive by both methods, 5% gave positive results only with direct smears, 1.1% were positive only by concn. and 65.4% were negative by both methods.
