Super’s Work Values Inventory

Abstract
Super’s Work Values Inventory (WVI), Form A, was administered to 200 tenth grade students and the resulting data submitted to two complementary multivariate analyses. Analysis I employed Guttman’s “rank reduction theorem” to investigate, on an a priori basis, the item grouping assumption employed in constructing the WVI. It was found that the forty-five items had been reasonably grouped into the fifteen categories. Analysis II consisted of a more conventional factor analytic study (using image analysis) followed by an a posteriori naming of the resulting factors. Internal consistency reliability data for the WVI scales is also presented, which appears to indicate that some of the scales may not be sufficiently reliable in the internal consistency sense for practical decisions about individuals. It is suggested that certain WVI scale scores should be combined to increase the internal consistency reliability coefficients of the resulting scales to more adequate levels. It is also suggested that more research is needed on the WVI so that practitioners can generate reliable profiles for individuals.
