Abstract
In 16 subjects with various heart diseases, mostly mitral stenosis, phentolamine gave a statistically significant fall in systemic and pulmonary artery pressure and in total peripheral resistance, while there was a significant increase in heart rate. The cardiac output showed no change. There were too few observations to make any definite conclusions as to the effect on pulmonary arteriolar resistance. There was a distinct time difference between the reactions in the systemic and pulmonary circulations. This time difference was due to the effect on the heart rate, which, by shortening the diastolic filling time in patients with mitral stenosis, retarded and modified the pressure fall in the pulmonary artery. Keywords
