An Inflammatory Lesion in an American Shad, Alosa sapidissima

Abstract
An adult male American shad, Alosa sapidissima, with an external swelling simulating a neoplasm was collected from the Russian River, California. Histological examination of the large cone-shaped protuberance disclosed it to represent chronic inflammation and repair in response to injury and infection. The combined findings suggest the lesion may have originated from a lamprey bite.
