Abstract
Application of parachlorobenzylnicotinium chloride, 2,4-dichlorobenzylnicotinium chloride, 3,4-dichlorobenzylnicotinium chloride, orthochloro-benzylnicotinium thiocyanate, benzylnicotinium bromide, or ortho-chlorobenzylnicotinium bromide to the stems of seedlings of Black Valentine snap bean in the form of a 4:1 lanolin-Tween 20 paste containing the nicotinium compound resulted in a reduction of stem elongation without gall formation in both illuminated and dark-grown plants. The effect was greatest in plants grown in darkness. Benzylnicotinium bromide was the least potent of the compounds, and 2,4-dichlorobenzylnicotinium chloride the most potent, as little as 0.5 mg. per plant depressing stem elongation. All controls were treated with the lanolin-Tween 20 paste minus the nicotinium compounds. The effect was observable within 48 hrs. Application of 0.5 mg. of 2,4-dichlorobenzylnicotinium chloride to hypocotyl, 1st internode, and midrib of primary leaf gave, respectively, 22.8, 33.5, and 7% reduction in stem elongation compared to controls. Using plants of different stages of maturity, the reduction in stem elongation was inversely proportional to the degree of maturity. Keywords
