Recent Methods of Generating Sound Stimuli for Use in Testing the Auditory Capacity in Animals

Abstract
Methods for generating alternating current for operation of transmitters for sound generation are discussed. The essential principles of the operation of electromagnetic generators and the self oscillator, dynatron, and heterodyne types of vacuum tube oscillators are indicated. The fundamental requirements of amplification systems and filtration devices are considered. Note is taken of the principles of operation of electro-magnetic and electrothermic transmitters. Means for the measurement of electrical oscillations in terms of frequency, intensity, and complexity, and the conversion of sound into alternating current, are discussed. Brief mention of acoustical problems encountered in air transmission of sound is made.
