Candida krusei (Cast.) Berkhout from the Draining Sinuses in a Human Patient Its Drug Sensitivity and Pathogenicity*

Abstract
Summary: A strain of Candida krusei (Cast.) Berkhout (IMI‐239586) was isolated from the draining sinuses in the perianal and gluteal region of a patient but finally the data did not support it to be the causative fungus. This strain was most sensitive to clotrimazole (MIC 0.39 μg/ml) followed by amphotericin B (1.56), nystatin (2.41) and miconazole nitrate (3.12). It survived in the internal tissues of experimental mice without causing any pathological symptoms or deaths. In general more positive cultures were obtained from the tissues of sacrificed animals which received higher inoculum.Zusammenfassung: Ein Stamm von Candida krusei (Cast.) Berkhout (IMI‐239586) wurde aus nässenden Fisteln in der Perianal‐ und Glutaealregion bei einem Patienten isoliert. Die weitere Beobachtung ließ jedoch nicht den Schluß zu, daß der Pilz für die Fistelbildung verantwortlich war. Der Stamm erwies sich als sehr empfindlich gegen Clotrimazol (MHK 0,39 μg/ml) sowie gegen Amphotericin B (1,56), Nystatin (2,41) und Miconazolnitrat (3,12). Nach experimenteller Infektion von Mäusen überlebte der Stamm im Gewebe der Tiere ohne pathologische Veränderungen oder den Tod der Tiere hervorzurufen. Der Pilz konnte aus den infizierten Tieren zurückisoliert werden, insbesondere nach Injektion höherer Zellzahlen.
