Antispasmodic Effect ofHagenia abyssinica

Abstract
The water extract of Kosso (H. abyssinica), as used in traditional Ethiopian medicine, was tested on the isolated guinea pig ileum using acetylcholine, histamine and BaCl2 as spasmogens. The effect of all 3 spasmogens was antagonized by Kosso in a concentration range of 0.05-0.2 ml/10 ml of bathing fluid. The mechanism of antagonism was noncompetitive. This smooth muscle inhibitory effect might contribute to the taenicidal action of Kosso.
