Paralysis by Ticks

Abstract
This article is always referred to as the first report of meningoradiculitis associated with Lyme disease. This article is currently of interest because there is a proposal to rename the Borrelia burgdorferi subspecies associated with meningoradiculitis Borrelia garinii (after the first author of this paper); perhaps Borrelia garinii-bujadouxii would be more appropriate. This article, which was originally published in Journal de Medecine de Lyon (1922;3:765–7), was republished in Lyons Médecine (1923;122:160–2), a more-accessible journal, and follow-up studies were never completed. Dr. Charles Garin was an intern at the time he wrote this article; he ended his career as a professor of gastroenterology at Lyon. Dr. Bujadoux disappeared without a trace. We have not included the references in the translation as they do not contribute to the paper.
