Byssus structure of larval forms of the fingernail clam, Musculium securis (Prime)

Abstract
The byssus in Musculium securis (Pelecypoda: Sphaeriidae) consists of a byssal stalk that originates in the foot of prodissoconch larvae, and a byssal bulb that inserts on the descending lamella of the inner gill of the parent. The byssus probably prevents precocious birth of young.
