Abstract
The author reviews the literature (62 studies) concerning the determinants of vocational interests. The 2 sets of factors considered are those intrinsic in the individual (age, sex and ability) and those inherent in the individual''s social framework (family, school and teachers, work experience, occupational information, hobbies and activities). No one factor[long dash]ability, school, or work experience, plays a large part in determining vocational interests, yet all factors are related to interests to some extent. "Family influences" are among the most effective, while "abilities" are among the least effective factors. Information on the importance of organic and physiol. differences in determining vocational interests is almost completely lacking. Recent studies of the effects of glands on personality show that certain organic factors are related to interests. Other studies are needed.
