To the Editor: The study by Priebe et al. in the February 21, 1980 issue, which compares the relative efficacy of cimetidine and antacid in the prevention of acute gastrointestinal bleeding,1 has raised questions about the validity of the Hemoccult slide test in examination of gastric aspirates obtained from patients taking cimetidine.2 , 3 As a result of a preliminary investigation, we have some comments to make on the suitability of this slide test as a means of detecting small amounts of occult blood in gastric fluid.We find that the test is very sensitive: a strongly positive reaction develops when as . . .
