Abstract
Relying on certain insights of cognitive grammar and connectionnism we demonstrate that the punctuation in use among the partners of a telematic dialog is the result of the interaction of certains constraints, mainly the physical and cognitive parameters ot this kind of interchange, and graphic conventions. We describe some general tendencies, such as the low frequency of period and comma — resulting from frequent omission of purely demarcative marks — , the high number of question marks, the extensive use of suspension points. Studying six individual cases, we demonstrate, however, the diversity of practices, which depart to a variable extent from standard punctuation and favour one or another function of punctuation.
