Collection of litter fall (leaves and seeds) over a known surface area is an integral part of many ecological studies. We describe a litter trap that is very durable and inexpensive yet is quickly constructed from readily available materials. The trap is easily emptied, light in weight, and easily positioned at any height or orientation, even on steep, rocky slopes. In addition, the trap is highly stable in strong winds, is unaffected by winter storms or fallen trees, and functions well in forest stands of different successional development. Other features include 100% retention of collected litter, a 15-L capacity, a 0.25-m2 collection surface, sharply delineated edges to minimize edge effect, rapid drainage following rainfall, and resistance to predation on fallen litter. The trap efficiently collects seeds as small as 1 mm in diameter.
