Abstract
The fluid-loss concept of shock is inadequate. Shock in anesthetized animals subjected to hemorrhagic hypotension or to traumatic procedures consists of a compensatory and a decompensatory phase, referable to vaso-excitor and vaso-depressor humoral factors with opposite actions. The development and persistence of a vaso-depressor factor explains the failure to respond to fluid therapy. Many expts. are descrd. to uncover the sites of origin of these 2 factors as well as the mechanisms leading to their formation and destruction. The factors are oppositely acting components of a homeostatic mechanism participating in the regulation of peripheral blood flow and blood pressure. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
