Abstract
The achievements of Japanese industry are customarily described as “miraculous”. Much of the credit for industrial growth is usually given to Japanese workers. A doubt is sometimes expressed about the ability of Japanese managements to succeed in manufacturing in overseas countries where such a workforce is lacking. In order to develop its economic base further, and to utilise its highly qualified management cadres, it is essential for Japan to invest increasingly in overseas manufacturing subsidiaries. The capacity of Japanese companies to manage indigenous workforces will be critical for the success of this stage of development. Keywords
