Abstract
Application of Lumley's definition of ``large eddy'' to Grant's measurements in a cylinder wake yields, for the dominant mode, a counter‐rotating eddy pair having cores approximately normal to the wake plane, in a plane parallel to the cylinder, and planes of circulation roughly normal to the maximum positive strain rate. Keywords
