INDUCTION OF OVULATION IN THE HEN BY INJECTION OF PROGESTERONE INTO THE BRAIN

Abstract
Progesterone in a solution of propylene glycol regularly induced premature ovulation in the hen when injected into certain regions of either the hypothalamus or the caudal ncostriatum but not in other parts of the forebrain. The effective quantity of hormone is estimated to be no more than 5 μg. Progesterone did not induce ovulation when injected into the pituitary. It is thus indicated that the steroid acts upon certain regions of the brain to cause release of ovulation-inducing hormone.
