Instability of the static solution to the closed string with rigidity

Abstract
It is pointed out that the classical static solution to the closed smooth string is unstable to radial perturbations, and thus unsatisfactory as a classical ground state. The energy of this model is unbounded from below, which indicates that it should be interpretable merely as an effective theory, requiring further terms in the action for a classical ground state to exist.Keywords
