Abstract
Several recent reports have proposed that acromegaly may be caused by excessive release of hypothalamic growth hormone releasing factor. In an effort to gain additional support for this hypothesis, evidence for the presence of growth hormone releasing substances in the peripheral blood of acromegalics was sought. Monkey pituitary glands incubated in the presence of acromegalic plasma demonstrated a 4- to 5-fold greater release of growth hormone than obtained from pituitaries in the presence of normal plasma. Although this may reflect raised levels of a circulating hypothalamic growth hormone releasing factor in acromegalic plasma, other factors may be responsible.
