Abstract
The long-term impact of rape on the marital relationship of the victim and her partner was assessed by means of clinicians' ratings and observations and the couples' self-reports. Eighteen couples were seen in conjoint marital therapy, and 25 couples were interviewed in their homes. The couple response pattern included problems in understanding and commitment, communication disturbances, and sexual concerns and dysfunction. Serious relationship dysfunctions may continue for years after the rape, although there is some evidence that chronic relationship disturbances tend to occur when the victim's prerape coping capacity had been impaired by serious individual psychopathology. Keywords
