Abstract
The development of an embryonic mouse kidney has been investigated in vitro by the time rafter method with special emphasis on early changes induced by the ureteral germ. Condensation of the mesenchyme around the inductor and a weakening of cellular motility can be observed as the first signs of a beginning differentiation. The inducing effect is operative in an approximately 200 micron wide zone in the mesenchyme. Later when the branches of the ureteral tree grow further apart the originally united condensation splits into pretubular islands which surround every branch ending and which later develop in situ into urinlferous tubules. An attempt is made to explain the results with the help of the theory of "selective fixation".Keywords
