The Quality of Relationships Between Elderly Parents and Their Out-of-Town Children

Abstract
Geographic distance often plays a role in the quality of parent-child relationships. This article reviews research findings, presents exploratory analyses of two research projects, and organizes key concepts (structure, association, affection, value consensus, functional assistance, and the normative base of each) regarding the relationship of distant child and elderly parent. A broad range of questions is suggested for research.
