Abstract
The expression for the potential energy stored in an acoustic field is examined. Two corrections to the accepted results are found. These corrections are small for a liquid but of major importance for a gas. Indeed, to obtain the average stored acoustic energy for a gas, it is necessary to have more exact solutions than are usually used. Thermodynamic arguments are made to show the meaning of the corrections introduced into the expression for the stored energy.
