Abstract
In 2 experiments lists of nonsense syllables were learned by the methods of recognition and recall. In a 3rd experiment Ss first learned to recognize a list of nonsense syllables and then to recall it. The recognition data could be described by a simple 2-state Markov model. A 3-state Markov model was needed for the description of the recall data. It was hypothesized that recall learning involved 2 stages, a recognition stage and a 2nd stage where the response becomes available in the absence of the stimulus, and that each of these stages can be described as a simple Markov process. In Experiment III it was shown that recall learning after recognition learning can actually be described by a 2-state Markov model. Keywords
