Abstract
Elderly persons living either alone or only with a spouse were more likely than those who lived with a child, a relative or a friend to prefer to move into an alternate setting (senior housing or a nursing home). Analyses of associations between preferred living arrangements and the wishes, as well as requests, for an alternate setting revealed limited evidence to support the hypothesis that residency with others is a substitute for an alternate setting. Keywords
