Abstract
This survey assesses the current use and development of expert systems for approaching and solving Civil Engineering problems. The engineering disciplines discussed are: Construction Engineering and Management, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering, and Transportation Engineering. Expert system applications for both operational and developmental uses are reviewed. Although artificial intelligence technology is relatively new for some disciplines, the survey results indicate a long term commitment to research and development of expert systems for construction. Expert systems offer new and potentially valuable capabilities to support decisionmaking in Civil Engineering, with the goal of reducing costs. Keywords
