Abstract
The analysis of the travel behavior of elderly people in six urban areas indicated that the persons over 65 who have available means for travel have mobility characteristics peculiar to their age group. Origin-destination survey data obtained from the urban transportation studies for several urban areas demonstrated that the elderly person who is able to make urban trips is at least as mobile as those in younger age groups. By the use of analysis of variance techniques, statistical differences were found to exist between the travel demands of age groups within urban areas. The indication of the high possible mobility of elderly people strengthens the findings of earlier research which has shown that the older person can exhibit latent travel desires which are unsatisfied by the normative techniques used in current transportation planning. Keywords
