Abstract
The uteri of 4 bitches near term were exposed through a lower midline abdominal approach. D-tubocurarine chloride, 60 mg., was injd. into a uterine artery of each animal and artificial respiration instituted. With 2 of the bitches the fetuses were delivered, the activity of the fetuses was noted, and then their cords were clamped. Curare was then injd. The fetuses of the other 2 bitches were not delivered until their uterine and ovarian vessels and the right horn had been clamped and the drug injd. Plasma d-tubocurarine chloride estimations were carried out on curarized pups while plasma was taken from noncurarized litter-mates for comparison. Pups whose maternal fetal circulation was intact showed evidence of curarization, and d-tubocurarine chloride was found in the plasma in measurable quantities. The findings do not contraindicate the clinical use of curare where smaller doses are employed. Keywords
