Hyperalimentation in the management of chronic inflammatory intestinal disease

Abstract
Patients (16) with advanced chronic inflammatory disease of the bowel were treated with hyperalimentation to restore and improve nutrition and provide bowel rest. An average weight gain of 9 lb was recorded for this group of patients even though 9 of the 16 had 14 surgical procedures performed during the study. One patient in the study developed Candida albicans septicemia and subsequently died. A standard hyperalimentation formula, delivery system and patient monitoring method were utilized effectively to achieve the maximum nutritional benefits with minimal hazards to patient welfare.
