Abstract
This article discussed the most important geophysical parameters which are required for both land-ice and sea-ice glaciology and the extent to which those parameters are obtainable from satellite data. For both land ice and sea ice one can identify a spectrum of types of parameter, ranging from those which can be determined to a usefully high precision using existing satellite technology to those which one does not yet know how to extract. The article suggests that even in the latter case there are promising techniques, but emphasizes that significant development and surface truth work must be performed if these are to be exploited. Keywords
