Abstract
The biomass of euphausiids m−2and m−3 were estimated from acoustic backscattering data recorded in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during the springs of 1976 and 1977. An empirically derived relationship was used to convert the backscattering voltage to grams wet weight of euphausiids. The size and distribution of patches of euphausiids within the acoustic scattering layers of euphausiids are described and the significance of the results discussed in relation to their surface swarming.
