Abstract
In order to understand the self-organized critical behavior of a one-dimensional, finite-size cellular automaton with a continuous state variable, proposed by Y. C. Zhang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 470 (1989)], calculations are performed. Analytical results for the distribution functions and the critical energy of finite chains are in complete agreement with the numerical results, and do not agree with earlier predictions. Keywords
