Abstract
Despite the recent proliferation of courses in Environmental Science/Studies, a consensus concerning the nature of the subject matter involved has yet to develop. Certain key concepts (systems, resources, the ecosystem, the ecosystem‐watershed, interdisciplinarity) have however, been identified, and the history and role of these in Environmental Science is described. An example of a foundation year undergraduate course in Environmental Science based on the concepts is then described, and some personal observations on the relationships between Environmental Science and some of its allied disciplines added.
